Three tours on the lower reaches of the Wey Navigation passing the historic  Newark Priory and New Inn pub at Send

Did you know that the term “stiff drink” originates from the use, in earlier years, of The New Inn at Send as a temporary mortuary? Funerals were sometimes held in the pub and mourners would quaff drinks over the body. Mine’s a Bloody Mary barman!

The metaphysical poet John Donne lived at Pyrford Place. He was Dean of St. Paul’s and was known for his mesmerizing sermons and preaching style.

We will be passing the ruins of Newark Priory, a twelfth century Augustinian priory that lies between Pyrford and Send.

cassocksThe Wey and Godalming Navigations present a relief from the vagaries of the Thames. The first two routes provide a strange contrast as you pass under the M25, roaring with traffic (or sometimes strangely quiet as the traffic inches along in some mega-jam!) and then run alongside it for a mile or so before turning away from the motorway into the green and tranquil Surrey countryside. There are a number of pubs en-route, the Pelican near Black Boy bridge, The White Hart Inn at New Haw lock, The Anchor at Pyrford lock and of course the New Inn at Send, just beyond Cart Bridge. Novices should probably opt for the shorter of the distances. The navigation runs from Thames lock in Weybridge for 20 miles through Guildford to Godalming Wharf.
