A route from New Haw to Woking with six portages each way
Navigation on the canal now starts at Greywell Tunnel and passes through Fleet, Farnborough, Mytchett, Brookwood, and Woking. Its eastern end is at Byfleet, where it connects to the Wey Navigation.
This, in turn, leads to the River Thames at Weybridge. Its intended purpose was to allow boats to travel from the docks in East London to Basingstoke and for the brick works in Basingstoke to supply bricks to London builders. By the time the canal was completed a new technology called ‘The Railway’ was spreading out across the UK and the canal was soon put out of business and fell into disrepair until its rejuvenation in the late 20th century.
Route : New Haw Lock on the Wey Navigation (KT15 2DS) to St. John’s on the Basingstoke Canal and return – 13 miles with 6 portages each way.
Take the M3, then M25 anti-clockwise (Gatwick/Dartford), stay in the left hand lane and take the first exit for Woking/Addlestone and then take the A318 to New Haw / Byfleet.
