Saturday 15th February 2014 – Storm force winds at Mytchett

On Saturday morning ten Intrepid Hamptoneers (Adam, Andrew, Barnet, Daniel, Derek, Jenny, Norma, Peter, Richard and Tony) set off in sunshine from Bell Hill at 10am. We arrived at the Basingstoke Canal centre at Mytchett and due to the storm force winds we decided to paddle downstream to Deepcut, as this part of the canal is more sheltered than heading in the Ash lock direction which would also be into the teeth of the gales.

After an initial rain shower the weather brightened up and we made our way up to Frimley top lock #28 where we turned and returned to the Canal centre where we decided to continue to the Mytchett Lake, the winds were so gusty that they threatened to blow us out of our boats. We turned there and made our way back to the Canal centre – in the last section we all did some pyramid exercises to get the heart rate up!! In total 5.25 miles in 1 hour 20 mins. Unfortunately there was a power outage so the cafe was closed, so we returned to Bell hill and six of us headed across to Bell Inn for lunch. No capsizes to report.
