Fri 1st Jan 2016

Tradition dictates that on New Year’s Day we go along the Wey to the Anchor at Pyrford, to clear awey any cobwebs from the Eve before.

But it doesn’t dictate where we start from – some start from Black Boy Bridge on the outskirts of Weybridge (round trip about 7 miles and 4 portages), others start from New Haw for a round trip of about 4 miles without portaging.  Some portage and paddle past the Anchor to the lock at Walsham (an extra mile or so).

Nor does tradition dictate how we get there:  most of us will paddle, but walking along the towpath is an option (and, I hesitate to mention this, there is a car park at the Anchor).

When Dan suggested we attempt the 13.5 mile Stour Descent from Sturminster Mill to Bryanston school, I had in mind an easy, almost effortless paddle down a fast flowing river.  The reality was somewhat different…

The six kayakers were Houran, Jenny, Mark, Tamra and myself bravely lead by Dan who had stepped in as trip leader at the eleventh hour.  I would’ve liked to have reported that we arrived at Boulters Lock without incident but that’s not strictly true….. read Peter Loy’s trip account here
